Our purpose is to protect, advocate, and enhance parks and green space in Sooke

OUR STORY

Friends of Sooke Parks Society is a registered not-for-profit society formed in 2023. Our purpose is to protect, advocate, and enhance parks and green space in Sooke.

Our membership is open to anyone interested in preserving, improving, and expanding local parks and green space.

WHY PARKS MATTER

We believe that parks and green space contribute to a vibrant and healthy community by providing publicly accessible outdoor environments where everyone feels welcome, safe, and respected.

As our community grows in population and housing densifies, abundant and easily accessible parks and green space are essential to living well. Parks are places to see and meet our neighbours and help us feel connected to our community.

HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

Parks and green spaces provide calming, natural buffers to local traffic and noise and best of all, they are free and accessible to everyone.

Parks offer families and individuals equitable access to outdoor space and facilitate the positive impacts of physical activity for children and adults.

ENVIRONMENT

Parks help protect natural spaces in our community, like forests, creeks, ponds, and open green space. They help improve our water quality, reduce noise pollution, and provide homes for plants, animals, and birds. During our summer heat waves, parks provide a cooling refuge for people living without air conditioning.

Preserving and expanding urban green space is one of the most important and impactful contributions that municipalities can make to promoting greater climate resiliency.
